 ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

I wish to express my deepest thanks to all those who aided in my preparation of this thesis.  First and foremost, I want to thank Dr. Spencer Tucker for all of his valuable input during the writing process.  I could not have chosen a more helpful person to be my major professor.  I would also like to thank Drs. Stevens and Shearer for taking part in my thesis committee and making themselves available when I needed their assistance.
I am mostly grateful to my parents, Anthony and Donna Macina for everything they have done for me.  Their patience and encouragement were my most valuable assets as a graduate student.  I know they share my relief at completion of this project.
